Ceramics - immersion & own expression

  • Malmö
  • 3 hours

A 12-week course for those who have previous experience in ceramics and want to develop your craft further. We immerse ourselves in turning and hand building based on your individual level and your own goals, focusing on technique, form and personal expression.

During the course, we explore decor, structure and different techniques, as well as learn how to mix our own glazes and analyze the results. Through practical exercises, experiments and individual supervision, you will have the opportunity to challenge your knowledge, discover new opportunities and develop your own idiom.

The course ends with a personal development project where you get to combine your new knowledge and take your ceramic creation further.

Practical information

Week 1 — Individual Technical Improvement

We start from the level and goals of the participant. Specialization in turning, centering, height and smoothness, as well as hand building, construction and jointing.

Week 2 — Shape Development and Proportions

Explore silhouette, balance, foot rings, caps and spouts, as well as combinations of turned and hand-built parts.

Week 3 — Exploring Kurinuki

We look at the Japanese way of working and adapt it to our objects, in both turned and hand-built works.

Week 4 — Decor and Finishing

Work with sgraffito, engober, carving, relief, colored clay and textures.

Week 5 — Personal Form Language

Explore color, pattern, repetition, contrast, and composition. Develop your own decor idea.

Week 6 -- Mix your own glazies

We go through glaze recipes and the function of raw materials. We learn to mix small test kits and document samples.

Week 7 — Analysis of Glaze Samples

We look at your results and analyze color, gloss, coverage, surface texture, substrate and deviations.

Week 8 — Glaze and Decor in Practice

Use the analysis in your own work and explore the interaction between glaze, texture and decor.

Week 9 — Nerikomi

Participants dye in clay and build up layers which are then cut through to reveal patterns in the clay itself. The technique can provide geometric motifs, organic patterns and almost textile-like expressions.

Week 10 — Plan your own development project

Plan an individual project with sketches and the choice of technique, shape, decor or glaze.

Week 11 — Own work and tutorial

Work hands-on with individual tutoring and technical challenges.

Week 12 — Evaluation and Continued Development

Reflect on technology, process and results and identify the next steps.
